Welcome to Fruitport Charter Township — a place where history meets community and opportunity.
Located in the heart of Muskegon County, Michigan, Fruitport is a vibrant township with deep historical roots, scenic landscapes and a thriving community spirit. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a visitor discovering our township for the first time, you’ll find a place rich in heritage and filled with possibility.
Fruitport’s story began in 1866 when Captain Edward L. Craw successfully cultivated peaches on this fertile land, attracting settlers and establishing what was then known as Crawville. The area flourished as a hub for fruit farming, with growers shipping their harvest from the shores of Spring Lake. In 1869, the township and village were renamed Fruitport, reflecting its agricultural success and strategic location as a shipping port. However, a harsh winter in 1874-75 devastated the peach orchards, forcing the community to adapt and build a more diverse local economy — one that continues to thrive today.
Spanning approximately 30.4 square miles, Fruitport Charter Township is home to a population of 14,575 residents, according to the 2020 census.
